What Does a Wedding Officiant Actually Do? (More Than You Think)

If you’re newly engaged and starting to plan, you’ve probably checked off the venue, photographer, dress, and cake… but when it comes to the ceremony itself, you might be wondering:
“Do we need an officiant? And what exactly do they do?”
As someone who’s been officiating weddings for over 13 years, I can tell you — officiants do much more than just stand up front and say a few words.
We're More Than a Legal Requirement.
Yes, your officiant is the one who makes it official — signing your marriage license and making sure everything is legally sound. But beyond that, we help shape the heart of your wedding day. Your ceremony isn’t just a formality. It’s a reflection of your relationship, your story, and your shared future.
Here’s What I Do as an Officiant:
Get to know you both: Your love story, personalities, values, and what matters most to you.
Write and personalize your ceremony: Whether you want something traditional, modern, funny, spiritual, or completely unique — it’s crafted with you in mind.
Guide you through the process: I’ll walk you through vow writing (or help you write them!), talk through unity ceremonies, and offer ideas you may not have thought of.
Handle the details: From arrival to the final pronouncement, I guide the flow of your ceremony so you can relax and be present.
Sign and file your license: No missed steps or legal confusion.
But the Best Part?
I make sure your ceremony is the calmest part of your wedding day.
You don’t have to stress about saying the right thing, forgetting your vows, or wondering what comes next. That’s my job — and it’s one I absolutely love doing.
Because in a day full of details, your ceremony should feel like coming home.
If you're planning your wedding and haven’t found your officiant yet — or if you're just realizing that this role might matter more than you thought — I’d love to connect.
Together, we can create a ceremony that feels true to your love and unforgettable for everyone there.
